The Volkswagen T-Roc aims to rival a wide number of junior SUVs in a price range that will see it compete with the Renault Captur at the lower end, the Nissan Qashqai in the middle and the Mercedes-Benz GLA at the upper end in one of Europe’s fastest-growing car segments.

The Volkswagen T-Roc is the latest VW model to be based on the company’s highly versatile MQB platform. It employs a MacPherson strut front and, depending on the engine and drive system, either a torsion beam or multi-link rear suspension in combination with an optional adaptive damper system.

Stylistically, the new SUV leans heavily on the earlier concept by the same name, with an exterior styled to emphasise its dual on and off-road character. VW boss Herbert Diess said at the car’s reveal that the new T-Roc would be “the new agility benchmark” in the class.

The interior has been adapted to the exterior design. It has a robust SUV feel and modern treatment of surfaces. The interplay between the Active Info Display and the specific infotainment system creates a new, digital and interactive cockpit. Via smartphone and Volkswagen Car Net it is possible to use a wide spectrum of online services and apps and to integrate the telephone and/or media library.

Like the Tiguan, the 2018 Volkswagen T-Roc too is offered with three petrol engines (TSI) and three diesels (TDI). They are being offered partly with front-wheel drive and manual gearbox, partly with front-wheel drive, 4Motion all-wheel drive (including 4Motion Active Control as standard) and 7-Speed DSG gearbox.

On the inside, the SUV will sport company’s 11.3-inch digital instrument panel for active information display. It also comes with an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and MirrorLink compatibility. The convenience quotient is also enhanced by an 8-channel Bose sound system, an inductive smartphone charge plate and a 300-watt.

As far as the engine specs are concerned, the new SUV will be offered with choice of multiple powerhouses – 3 petrol and 2 diesel turbocharged units. The transmission duties will be taken care by 6-speed manual and a 7-speed dual-shift automatic unit. Moreover, the UK market will see 1.0-litre 3-cylinder petrol unit which will develop 117bhp and 271Nm. While, the other 1.5-litre and 2.0-litre petrol engines that can develop 152bhp/339Nm and 193bhp/434Nm of max power respectively.

The SUV will come with a choice of three petrol and two diesel turbocharged engines. Transmission options will include a six-speed manual and a seven-speed dual-shift automatic gearbox. For the UK market, the SUV will get a 1.0-litre 3-cylinder producing 117bhp and 271Nm. The other petrol engines includes a 1.5-litre 4-cylinder and 2.0-litre 4-cylinder petrol engines producing 152bhp/339Nm and 193bhp/434Nm, respectively. On the other hand, the 1.6-litre 4-cylinder diesel variants will produce 117bhp whereas the 2.0-litre 4-cylinder unit will be offered in 2 states of tunes – 152hp and 193hp. The top-of-the-line models will be mated to a 7-speed dual shift gearbox and 4Motion four-wheel-drive unit.

Volkswagen T-Roc models equipped with 4Motion four-wheel drive receive a so-called ‘active control’ function. It provides the choice between two on-road modes, street and snow, as well as two off-road modes, off-road and off-road individual. An optional feature on front-wheel-drive models, the 4Motion four-wheel-drive models also receive a driver profile function as standard. It allows the driver to choose between five modes: Comfort, Normal, Sport, Eco and Individual.

VW claims the Volkswagen T-Roc leads its class in terms of driver assistant systems. Among the standard equipment on all models is automatic post-collision braking, active land keeping and a front monitoring system, which incorporates pedestrian monitoring and emergency braking. High-end models also receive a driver alert system.
